Meet the Ophthalmology Team

Marc E. Rainbow, DVM
Diplomate American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology


In 1991, Marc Rainbow received his bachelor's of science degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in the field of laser and optical physics.  After graduation, he received a commission in the United States Air Force.  He was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX and Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM.  In 1996, Marc left active duty to pursue his veterinary education.

Marc graduated summa cum laude from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in June of 2000.  He completed a Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Internship at Texas A&M University in 2001.  Marc was accepted to an Ophthalmology Residency at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, during which he also completed a Master's of Science degree.

Dr. Rainbow finished his ophthalmology training in July 2004 and moved to San Antonio to join South Texas Veterinary Specialists and start South Texas Veterinary Ophthalmology.

April Burns, RVT
Born and raised in Amarillo, April moved to San Antonio in 2004 to attend the veterinary technician program at Palo Alto College.  She graduated in May 2007 and became an RVT in August 2007.   She and her fiancee are planning their wedding and are proud parents of "Frank", an 8 year old Siamese, and "Sushi" a black cat that they rescued 2 years ago. 

Lisa Shafer
Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Lisa has worked in the field of veterinary medicine for over 13 years.  She is a proud Mom of two girls, Felilcia, her 22 year old daughter and "Bachi Louise", an 8 month old puppy.  Felicia, who is following in her Mom's footsteps is a veterinary technician as well.
