Advancements in veterinary diagnostic, therapeutic and preventative medicine, have resulted in our pets living richer and longer lives. Cancer risk, unfortunately, increases with this longevity. Cancer is a growing challenge to pets, their families and their veterinarians. To this end, the Oncology service's mission is to diagnose and treat cancer in companion animals and extend the human-animal bond. Cancer diagnostic modalities include: routine blood work, radiographs, CT Scan, ultrasound, cytology and/or biopsy, and occasionally, more invasive techniques. Oncology therapy relies upon surgery, chemotherapy and pain management techniques. Chemotherapy is, for the most part, carried out on an outpatient basis. During the stressful time of a cancer diagnosis, our aim is to treat the family and the patient with compassion and empathy. We understand that this is a very difficult time and we hope to ease the anxiety and fear. As a two-time cancer survivor, Dr. Randall fully understands all of the component parts of diagnosis, treatment and concerns. The treatment and decision making process is a group decision: the primary care veterinarian, the specialist and the family. Referring veterinarians interaction is an integral part of the process. Oncology cases are not seen without referral and the generalist is intimately part of the diagnostic and treatment plan. The goal of the Oncology service is to bring the talents of multiple specialists to the patients medical team and to deliver the highest level of care possible with excellence and compassion. |
